The Department of Primary and Secondary Education has, for the time being, put on hold a circular asking teachers to repay special allowance given to those appointed after 2008.

The Commissioner for Public Instruction had issued orders to recover ₹127 lakh from 1,557 primary school teachers and ₹512 lakh from 3,789 high school teachers.

This was done after objections were raised by the Comptroller and Auditor General.

The Commissioner had asked teachers to repay the amount failing which they were told that their November’s salary would be deducted.
