The police have sought a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the alleged misappropriation of premium collected for micro-insurance products of the Life Insurance Corporation by the authorised agents.
Superintendent of Police Amit Singh told presspersons here on Thursday that they had got information about the alleged misappropriation of premium amount from different parts of the State. Similar incidents were reported in Davangere and parts of Mysore districts. “I have written to the higher authorities to refer the case to the CID so that a comprehensive investigation can be done and the guilty identified,” he said.
Following allegations of misappropriation of premium amount, the LIC had filed complaints against three non-government organisations in Hassan district last month. The cases were registered in police stations of Hassan town, Belur and Channarayapatna town. Belur police arrested three persons, heads of NGOs, Baligondu Guri Rural Development Society and Samanvaya. Both the NGOs are authorised agents for micro-insurance products of the LIC. As per the complaints registered, Rs. 32 lakh was misappropriated by the NGOs. The NGOs had collected premiums from policy holders through their representatives in villages but had not deposited them.
