Centre's stand on Mekedatu only after Karnataka's proposal, says Ravi

The Bharatiya Janata Party's state unit on Friday maintained that the Union Government can intervene in the Mekedatu dam only after the state government makes a concrete proposal to it.

BJP State General Secretary C. T. Ravi told a news conference, “Karnataka is yet to send the details of the project to the Centre. The question of the Centre’s intervention comes only after the project proposal is sent to the Centre.”

Karnataka plans to build a dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu. Tamil Nadu, another Cauvery riparian state, has objected to the plan.

Mr. Ravi was responding to queries whether the state party unit would make use of the ongoing party national executive - where all top party leaders including the Prime Minister are present - to impress on them the need to step in in Karnataka's favour.
