Centre will send team to assess drought in Karnataka: Jayachandra

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra said that the Union government will send a team headed by Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture to the State to assess the drought situation in the State.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Mr. Jayachandra said that 135 taluks in the States have been declared as drought-hit and crop loss due to drought amounted to Rs. 12,000 crore in the State. He said that the government had sought Rs. 3,100 crore from the Union government to address drought.

The State required 10,200 MW of power, of which it was capable of producing 6,000 MW. The remaining would be purchased from the National Thermal Power Corporation.

The ninth round of vaccine for cattle to prevent foot-and-mouth disease would be given from September 8 to September 30 in the State.

The amount spent on vaccination would be borne by the Union government, Mr. Jayachandra added.
