Central team inspects work on Gulbarga Airport

March 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KALABURAGI:

A high-level three-member team of officials from the Airports Authority of India and the Civil Aviation Ministry, along with senior officials of the Infrastructure Development Department of the State government, inspected the half-complete Gulbarga Airport at Srinivas Saradagi village on the outskirts of Kalaburagi on Wednesday.

Official sources said here on Wednesday that the visit was based on a request by the department to visit the airport and give a detailed report of the remaining work to be completed and its estimated cost.

The team consisted of Executive Director of the authority T.S. Chandramouli, General Manager of Goa Airport M.N.N. Rao, Deputy General Manager of the Goa Airport V.S. Krishna and the officials of the department.

The authority and the ministry has made it clear that the Central government would not provide any funds for completing the incomplete work and the entire cost of the construction of the remaining works in the airport would be borne by the State government.

After getting the report, the State government would have to deposit the cost of the construction of the left out portion of the airport as per the estimates.

The tenders would be floated for completing the work by the authority and after the completion of the pending works, a demand survey would be conducted and decision taken on introducing flights from Gulbarga airport to other centres.

The government had taken a decision to cancel the agreement with a conglomerate to construct the airport in Gulbarga due to the inordinate delay in completing the work and had asked the AAI and the Civil Aviation department to take up the construction of the remaining portion of the airport to start the air services from Kalaburagi.
