The State Cabinet is learnt to have decided on Friday to supersede the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council whose tenure ends on April 22.
Some Congress leaders, who met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah after the Cabinet meeting to discuss this issue, told The Hindu that the decision to dissolve the civic body had been taken in the wake of a report by senior bureaucrat Rajendra Kumar Kataria into alleged financial irregularities and an ongoing inquiry by the Criminal Investigation Department. Earlier, briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra said the Cabinet was of the view that trifurcation of the BBMP is the only option for delivering good governance in Bengaluru.
The Cabinet had cleared the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, which would be tabled in the legislature session on Monday, besides discussing the issue of trifurcation in detail, he said and noted that members had made various suggestions at the meeting.
