Khade Bazaar, the main market of Belagavi, remained closed till afternoon following the bandh call on Saturday.

Khade Bazaar, the main market of Belagavi, remained closed till afternoon following the bandh call on Saturday.

The bandh call by various farmers’ groups to pressure the Union government for an early solution to the dispute on the Kalasa-Banduri Nala project evoked mixed response here on Saturday.

State transport services were hit as the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation suspended its services in the city and on inter-district and inter-State routes.

Some farmers staged demonstrations and burnt tyres at Fort Circle and Rani Channamma Circle.

Farmers also formed a human chain for a while at the Rani Channamma Circle.

Trading operations in Khade Bazaar, the main market close to central bus stand in the city and commercial establishments around Rani Channamma Circle and Ganpat galli were fully affected till afternoon. Educational institutions, government offices and banks functioned as usual but attendance at banks was thin for the day.

The agitation also coincided with the MWDT currently hearing the matter related to the water dispute between the three riparian States of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.

The bandh was also organised to mark the completion of a year-long struggle of the farmers spearheaded by Kalasa-Banduri Nala Horata Samiti, Karnataka Rajya Raith Sangh, Bharatiya Krishik Samaj and other organisations.
