Bus crew urged to be aware, responsible

Not realising the onerous responsibility on the person behind the wheels is one among the major causes for road mishaps, said Bhujanga Shetty, who has been driving heavy vehicles for nearly three decades.

He was speaking at an orientation programme for the city bus crew organised during the 26th National Road Safety Week here on Saturday. Mr. Shetty said the other reasons included ignorance about mechanical aspects of the vehicle; stress, and ignorance of traffic rules.

Mr. Shetty urged his juniors to be responsible while driving and prevent accidents. Resource person Manjunath Nisarga explained the reasons behind different accidents with the help of slideshows and short films.

Dakshina Kannada District Bus Operators’ Association president Nelson Pereira said that the association has been striving hard to inculcate good driving habits among the crew.

Inaugurating the programme, Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Uday Nayak urged the crew to strictly follow traffic rules, thereby avoiding fatalities on roads. Over 200 crew participated in the programme.
