A nine-year-old boy who was chained in his house by his father in Malavalli town in Mandya district was rescued on Tuesday.

On a tip-off, members of the Child Welfare Committee and staff of the Social Welfare Department raided the house on Pete Beedhi and saw Mohammed Toufit chained to a 20-kg cast-iron weight.

Though Toufit said he had spent at least six nights with his leg chained, his family members said his father chained him three days ago.

According to the police, Toufit, a student of a madrassa in the town, often used to run away from classes and his father, Jahir, chained him to “discipline” him.

CWC to file complaint

The CWC members said they would file a complaint under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Juvenile Justice Act against Mr. Jahir.
