The BJP core committee is learnt to have favoured the candidature of party leader Prabhakar Kore for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election as its central unit is yet to propose any national leader for the seat from Karnataka.
Such a stand by the party to re-nominate Mr. Kore, whose term as Rajya Sabha member is ending soon, is learnt to have been taken at the core committee’s meeting here on Friday. Earlier, there was speculation that the party central leadership might ask its State unit to elect any of the Union Ministers, who are not members of either Houses of Parliament, to the Rajya Sabha. However, the central leadership is yet to put forth any strong proposal in this regard, sources said.
The core committee is also learnt to have favoured the candidature of the former Deputy Chief Minister K.S. Eshwarappa for the elections to the Legislative Council from the Assembly constituency to be held next month. With this, decks are being cleared not just for Mr. Eshwarappa’s entry into the Council, but also his election as the Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House in place of D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who has now been elected to the Lok Sabha.
