A day after confusion prevailed over the power-sharing agreement among the Congress leaders in the Bidar Zilla Panchayat , the party has clarified that the president and vice-president of the civic body would be changed after 30 months.
Just after Bharatbai Sherikar and Prakash Patil were elected president and vice-president of the panchayat respectively on Monday, speculations were rife that the two had agreed to give up their posts after two-and-a-half years.
Geetha Pandit Chidri, another contender for the top post, had maintained that they had signed an understanding and that District in-charge Minister Umashree and a few Congress MLAs were witnesses to it.
However, Ms. Sherikar denied signing such an agreement.
On Tuesday, District Congress Committee president Khaji Arshed Ali issued a press release saying that Ms. Sherikar and Mr. Patil had been elected to the top posts for the first 30 months of the tenure of the Zilla Panchayat.
He said that there was an agreement among the leaders to swap positions after 30 months.
Mr. Ali said that Ms. Sherikar and Mr. Patil would resign after 30 months and two others (belonging to the Congress) would take their place.
He also clarified that the tie-up with the Janata Dal (Secular) was only limited to the Zilla Panchayat.
