Alert police averted an ATM theft at Balenahalli in Arsikere taluk on Tuesday night. The police reached the spot within minutes of receiving a tip-off. The miscreants ran away from the scene.

Sadanand Thippannavar, Arsikere Rural Circle Inspector of Police, told The Hindu on Wednesday, that a gang of six to eight people barged into a Canara Bank ATM at Balenahalli around 2 a.m. They beat up the security guard and tied him up.

“The driver of a truck passing by on the road noticed some people breaking open the ATM machine. He called up the police control room. Gandasi station PSI Arokhyappa, who was on night rounds, received the information and rushed to the spot with his men,” Mr. Thippannavar said.

As the police rushed the spot, the thieves got a hint and fled. The police could not take them to custody. “We have seized a gas cutter machine and an iron rod from the scene. We have begun the investigation to nab the dacoits,” the CPI said.
