Shivamogga MP and national vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party B.S. Yeddyurappa on Friday stressed the need to provide the people from all strata of society with an easy access to banking services.

Inaugurating a new branch of the United Bank of India (UBI) at Gandhi Bazaar here, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that banks should adopt an inclusive approach for development. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), the flagship programme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launched to achieve financial inclusion, had evoked overwhelming response. More than 11.5 crore bank accounts had been opened across the country under the scheme. Women comprise 51 per cent of the total account-holders and 60 per cent of accounts were in rural areas, he said.

With the objective of enhancing job creation and accelerating the growth rate of gross domestic product (GDP), the Union government had launched the Make-in-India initiative. Banks had a pivotal role to play in making the initiative a success. Banks should provide easy access to loans for no-frill account-holders, who were interested in self-employment ventures, he said. MLC R.K. Siddaramanna, Executive Director of UBI Deepak Narang, Assistant General Manager R. Elango, and Manager of Shivamogga branch Vijay Kumar Sajjan were present.
