In a freak accident, a 22-year-old BBM student died after he accidentally slipped from the staircase in his house.
The victim has been identified as V. Prajwal, a student of Williams College near J.P. Nagar. The incident occurred around 11.30 p.m. at the house located in Eshwari Layout.
Prajwal’s father Venkatesh Prasanna, a senior software engineer at Infosys, was staying with his family on the ground floor. Prajwal was staying in a room on the terrace.
Based on the statements of Prajwal’s family members, the J.P. Nagar police said: “Prajwal had his dinner around 11 p.m. and went to his room to sleep. But he had forgotten to take his mobile phone. Around 11.30 p.m. he decided to get his mobile phone. But since the stairs were slippery and full of water, he decided to step on the supporting railing, attached to the staircase. But his left leg got entangled in the railing.”
“Prajwal lost his balance and was dangling from the staircase. In the process his spinal chord was damaged,” J.P. Nagar Inspector S.K. Umesh said.
Hearing his cries for help, his family members rushed to the spot and managed to get him down. They rushed Prajwal, who was in a coma, to a nearby hospital where he died.
Owing to the downpour on Friday night, water had accumulated on the stairs and they were slippery. Therefore, Prajwal had tried to get down through the railings, based on the statements of the victim’s family, the officer said.
