Police sub-inspector Mallikarjun Bande (40), who died in Yoshada Super-Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad on Wednesday, was buried with full State Honours at Khajuri village in Aland taluk of Gulbarga district on Thursday evening at 4.30 p.m.
The body was first taken in a procession around the village in the afternoon and was buried in a grave in the Bande family farm, a few km away from the village.
Thousands, even from surrounding villages witnessed the funeral.
The last rituals were followed according to the Veerashaiva religious system. Around 11 seers, including the Jaya Mrityunjaya Swami of Kudalasangama Panchamasali Peetha, in Bagalakot district, and Mahantha Shivacharyaru of Sulpul Math, in Gulbarga, participated.
Earlier on Wednesday night, the body of was brought to Gulbarga from Hyderabad.
Hundreds of people were waiting at the District Armed Reserve police grounds to receive the body.
Members of the NaMo brigade took out a candlelight march on the main streets of the city.
Mr. Bande’s family broke into tears as the van carrying the casket arrived.
Several leaders such as Malikayya Guttedar, Subhash Guttedar, B.R. Patil, Dattatraya Patil Revoor, Amarnath Patil, Ajay Singh, Priyank Kharge, Shobha Karandlaje, Revu Naik Belamagi, Sunil Vallyapure, Baburao Chawan and Doddappagouda S. Patil Naribol, attended the last journey of Mr. Bande to Khajuri.
Superintendent of Police Amit Singh also paid his last respects.
DemandsJayamrityunjaya Swami has urged the government to transfer Inspector-General of Police (North Eastern Range ) Mohammad Wazir Ahmed and for a compensation of Rs. 1 crore to the family of Mr. Bande.
