Bahuroopi, a national theatre festival, was inaugurated on Sunday by playwright and actor Girish Karnad at Rangyana. The annual theatre fest will feature 84 groups, 24 plays and other folk artiste groups.

After inaugurating the event, Mr. Karnad recalled B.V. Karanth’s contribution to set up Rangayana and promote theatre activities across the State.

Referring to the theme of the fest ‘migration’, Mr. Karnad said that the world was witnessing problems faced by migrants in the West Asia and South America and border areas of India and Bangladesh.

Bhagirathi Bai Kadam, director of Rangayana, said that the presence of the United Liberation Front of Assam and the presence of the army had robbed people of normal life in Assam.

She said that people would migrate from one place to another “Rangayana had selected the theme migration and to discuss it threadbare,” she said.

As part of the festival, there would also be a national seminar on theatre and theatre criticism workshops on January 20 and 21.
