January 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:13 am IST - HUBBALLI:

Jagadish Nagar Ashraya Nivasigala Hitharakshana Samiti staged a protest here on Monday demanding that alternative Ashraya houses be allotted to those whose houses were acquired for the expansion of the Hubballi Airport.

They alleged that the promises given to them during the acquisition had not been met yet and officials were trying to prevent beneficiaries from getting alternative houses under the pretext of law.

Secretary of the samiti Premanath Chikkatumbal said that while the officials had promised that alternative houses would be built for residents of 188 Ashraya houses out of the 622 houses in Jagadish Nagar, not a single house had been built. He alleged that the district administration and the municipal corporation were trying to shun their responsibilities. However, the protesters dropped their idea of locking the office as the municipal commissioner was out of town. HDMC Joint Commissioner Shakeel Ahmed and promised them that the municipal commissioner would convene a meeting within a week to address their problems.
