Lieut General K.M. Cariappa, assumed charge as first Indian commander-in-Chief of the India Army.

Chief of the Army Staff General Bipin Rawat on Saturday said the Indian Army would recommend Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, to Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa.

Speaking at Gonikoppal in Kodagu district after unveiling the statues of Field Marshal Cariappa and General K.S. Thimayya, the Army chief said there was no reason why he was not deserving of the highest award considering his services to the country.

Cariappa was conferred the rank of Field Marshal on April 28, 1986, and he was also a recipient of the Order of the British Empire for his role in the Burma campaign against the Japanese during the Second World War.
