An arecanut grower has allegedly been cheated of Rs. 48.51 lakh in Kanasinakatte village in Bhadravathi taluk.
The police have said that Sudhakar and Shivamurthappa, residents of Kanasinakatte, reportedly purchased 258 quintals of arecanut from Mallikarjun C.Y., a resident of the same village, in phases from October to December, 2015, at the cost of Rs. 76.33 lakh.It included arecanut grown on the land of Mr. Mallikarjun and that he had harvested and processed by entering into cheni agreement with other farmers.
The purchasers had assured Mr. Mallikarjun that they would pay him the amount after selling the arecanut.
In a complaint lodged with the Holehonnur police station, Mr. Mallikarjun has alleged that the purchasers had paid him only Rs. 27.82 lakh and that they allegedly refused to pay the remaining amount.
The complainant has also alleged that the purchasers had intimidated him when he had demanded the remaining amount.
Based on the complaint, Holehonnur police have booked cases under Section 406 (criminal misappropriation of property entrusted to someone), 420 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code against Mr. Sudhakar and Mr. Shivamurthappa.
The police have said that the accused were absconding and that a manhunt.
