Amendment to land acquisition Act opposed

January 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Hassan:

Hassan District Congress Committee will stage protest against the amendments to the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013, brought in by the Union government through an ordinance.

B. Shivaram, president of the DCC, told presspersons here on Thursday that the amendments were against the interests of farmers. The United Progressive Alliance government had brought in the Act to acquire land with the consent of farmers and pay them a fair compensation.

However, the BJP government had brought in the amendments to those provisions through an ordinance, without allowing any debate on the subject in Parliament. “When the UPA brought in the law, the BJP leaders, who were then in the Opposition benches, had welcomed it. We are surprised, how will they justify the amendments?” he asked.

The party would stage protests at taluk centres and the district headquarter soon. “Farmers across the country should raise their voice against the amendments,” he said.
