Though the water level in Almatti dam is depleting with the temperature touching 42 degrees Celsius, the situation is not alarming because there is still two tmcft of live storage, say officials of Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Ltd. (KBJNL).
“The live storage is enough to meet the drinking water demand of Vijayapura and some villages of Bagalkot till June, when we expect to get rains,” the officials said. They, however, said that this year, owing to temperature reaching close to 40 degrees Celsius in March itself, evaporation is high, at around 700 cusecs per day. They believe this will not affect the supply of drinking water.
The officials say they had taken precaution by stopping the release of water through canals. They point out that water was at a similar level in 2013 also.
