Lokayukta Y. Bhaskar Rao has directed the Housing Department to complete the implementation of housing schemes for the Backward Classes by June.

In a letter addressed to Principal Secretary, Housing, and Managing Director, Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Scheme, Mr. Rao said the Lokayukta had registered a suo motu case on non-allotment of houses and sites to those from the Backward Classes and below the poverty line families.

Enquiries with officials revealed that though the State and Union government had initiated housing schemes for them since 2003, they had not been implemented due to various reasons.

Mr. Rao said 31,469 sites and 11,333 houses in rural areas and 30,580 sites and 12,087 houses in urban areas had not been allotted.

He directed officials to implement the schemes by June and said the department could initiate allotment process in phases and submit a report to the Lokayukta.

Mr. Rao also directed the Housing Department to issue instructions to the Panchayat Raj Department to clarify that extra amount would not be collected from beneficiaries apart from the prescribed fee.
