Airport expansion faces many hurdles

The expansion of Mysuru airport faces many hurdles.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has to realign the Mysuru-Nanjangud road to facilitate the expansion of the airport for which the State government has to identity and acquire suitable land.

Unless the Mysuru-Nanjangud stretch of NH-212 is diverted, the expansion cannot be taken up and the runway cannot be extended.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, MP Pratap Simha said the State government had been asked to acquire land and help the NHAI to shift NH-212.

If the government responds positively, then work will begin soon, he said. He said the construction of an underpass was mooted on NH-212 but was opposed by the Airport Authority of India over security reasons.

Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, former Minister G.M. Siddeshwar, PWD Minister H.C. Mahadevappa and Mr. Simha had conducted an inspection a few months ago, during which it was found that the runway had to be expanded to facilitate operation of bigger flights.
