The Mysuru-based All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), a premier institute in communication disorders, has developed iCry, a software for infant cry analysis, which will identify whether a newborn is suffering from any abnormality. It has been developed under AIISH research project fund and the institute is preparing to file a patent application.
AIISH director S.R. Savithri told The Hindu that the software can be shared with hospitals, particularly maternity hospitals and nursing homes, once the technology is patented.
iCry will study both healthy and high-risk infant cries. Early detection of high-risk infants would help investigate and recommend rehabilitation procedures.
Ms. Savithri said the institute has a database of infant cries in its archive with parameters on normal and high-risk infants. The parameters are compared with the cry of the newborn and their health is assessed, she explained. “The cry can reveal a babies’ health. It may not be only communication disorder, but also nervous system, respiratory problems, larynx disorders, and speech problems,” she said.
Ms. Savithri said the institute has proposed to seek patent for another technology developed by it for online hearing screening in rural areas.
This technology too had been developed under the AIISH research fund project.
