Afforestation drive to be taken up at Palimar

April 22, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - Udupi:

Members of the ‘Namma Mane, Namma Mara’ Team and Hoige Friends will launch a drive to grow more trees at Palimar village in Udupi district here on April 23.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Avinash K., leader of Namma Mane Namma Mara, said that the programme will be launched at the Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple in Palimar by planting 12 saplings. There are about 2,200 houses in Palimar.

Since the Hoige Friends was based in Palimar, it will try to reach as many houses as possible. The saplings would be planted only in those houses whose owners are interested in growing trees.

There would be constant monitoring of the growth saplings by the organisation. “Already we are getting calls from local people about the afforestation programme,” he said.

The intention was to increase greenery in entire Palimar village. Those interested in getting the saplings planted could call Hoige Friends on telephone numbers: 8105257138 or 8197605299 or 8105311982. The members of the organisation would come and plant the saplings for free. They would accept donation only if it was given voluntarily. “Mostly we are giving importance to planting saplings in the front yard or back yard of houses so that proper care and watering is done to them,” he said.

With the heat increasing every summer, people were realising the importance of growing more trees, he added.
