Members of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and some other associations participating in a meeting, organised to oppose decisions of banks on auctioning of gold ornaments, in Mandya on Tuesday.

The farmers here have appealed to officials of all nationalised and cooperative banks to cancel auction of gold jewels pledged for loans.

Leaders of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and some Kannada associations convened a meeting here on Tuesday, to oppose decisions of banks on auctioning of gold ornaments.

The banks have started issuing notices to farmers stating that they would auction gold ornaments “if the outstanding loan amounts issued to the farmers were not cleared immediately”, they said.

Thousands of farmers in the district have suffered losses due to drought in the last two years.

Therefore, the farmers are unable to clear the loans immediately. Hence, banks should cancel the auction and allow some time to the farmers to repay the loans, KRRS leader Shambhunahalli Suresh said.
