Mangaluru International Airport will display murals, paintings and other artworks showcasing the culture of the region in all vantage spots in the terminal building shortly.

It is to reflect the flavour of the region to the passengers, according to V.V. Rao, director of the airport.

Speaking to reporters at the airport on Thursday, on the concluding day of three-day Dasara celebrations observed by the airport for the first time, he said that artworks on Yakshagana, Kambala, Bhootaradhane and other forms will enhance the visual cultural experience.

The director said that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had received responses from seven curators for the display of murals, paintings and other artworks.

The Dasara celebrations began with ‘raag rang sugam sangeeth’ on Tuesday, followed by ‘sursagar’ fusion band concert on Wednesday and ended with a tiger dance and Bharatanatyam performance on Thursday.

“Since airports are a touch-point for travellers to interact with the region and there is no much to showcase to the world, hosting such national festivals at the airport is the perfect way to introduce the cultural diversity to the guests,” he said.

Meanwhile, B. Ramanath Rai, Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada, has written to the Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju to ensure safety of aircraft/passengers at the airport.

Referring to a recent incident of AAI declaring an emergency to accommodate an Air India Express flight, with 173 passengers bound for Dubai, returning with an engine failure and another aircraft, with 185 passengers, skidding while landing, Mr. Rai said that this has been a cause for concern for people transiting through the airport and that the Union Minister should take steps to enhance security and safety measures at the airport, he said.
