: A couple, who were facing parental objections and had declared their intention to end life together, got married with the support of well-wishers here on Thursday.

Basava (25), from Doni village, Mundargi taluk, Gadag district, working in a wooden-roofing firm, and Lalitha (20), from Hubballi, have been in a relationship ever since he met her a year ago. But parents of both were opposed to their wedding, though they were of the same caste. In the meantime, Lalitha’s parents began searching for a groom.

Depressed, Basava informed his employer Jagadish about their decision to commit suicide together. Mr. Jagadish then informed a social worker, Vishu Shetty, who began efforts to resolve the issue. He also made arrangements for Ms. Lalitha to stay in a separate house in Ambalapady.

Though only the boy’s parents finally gave in, Mr. Shetty arranged, at his own expense, the marriage here on Thursday.
