A repeat of 2007?

Though the High Court order has essentially given the government six months’ time to hold elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike council, the day the Governor gives his assent to the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2015, the BBMP ceases to exist, thereby making the six-month deadline irrelevant.

Civic experts, who spoke to The Hindu on condition of anonymity, pointed out that High Court order had not fixed any specific timeframe for the polls to be held to the civic body in such a scenario. This could lead to a repeat of 2007 when the BBMP was formed. The polls were held only after a three-year legal battle in 2010.

The then State government had used the logistics of the formation of the new BBMP as a pretext to postpone the polls. The incumbent government may also tread the same path, experts fear.
