Coast Guard Karnataka on Sunday organised a special coastal clean-up drive to mark its 41st Raising Day at Panambur, Malpe and Tagore and Kodibag (Karwar) beaches.
A release from Coast Guard here said the drive was aimed at increasing awareness about Swacch Bharat and Swacch Sagar Abhiyan undertaken by the coastal security force.
More than 400 volunteers, including students from various educational institutions in the area, representatives from voluntary organisations, municipal bodies, residents and coastal security police participated in the drive.
With everyone’s efforts, 215 kg of debris and waste was collected from beaches in Mangaluru and 205 kg debris from beaches at Karwar. The garbage included polythene bags, wrappers and other non-biodegradable waste.
According to the release, Deputy Inspector General K.R. Suresh, the Commander Coast Guard Karnataka, who was amongst the volunteers undertaking the cleanliness drive said, “Swacch Bharat and Swacch Sagara Abhiyan are the flagship programmes of the Union government. Each and everyone should participate voluntarily keeping the surroundings neat and clean so that our coastal areas and the nation can become litter-free.”
The volunteers were sensitised on the importance of keeping the environment and coasts clean.
