Senior Congress leader, MP from Chikodi and former minister Prakash B. Hukkeri dismissed as "sheer rumours" the reports in a section of media that he was resigning from the party in support of the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, S.M. Krishna, who quit the Congress on Saturday night.

"I don't know how and why rumours of my resignation have been spread when I haven't said it, I can't help it if someone is spreading rumours," he told THE HINDU on Sunday.

He said he was indeed pained to learn a tall leader like Mr. Krishna had to quit after giving precious five decades of his life to the party and the nation. He said he was not aware of the exact reasons and circumstances that compelled Mr. Krishna to take such a strong decision.

He said he would meet Mr. Krishna and request him to remain with the party. There were many in Congress who were groomed by Mr. Krishna and pained by his unexpected decision. "We will see what turn the situation will take in the next few days," he said.
