Eight persons, including seven women, going to attend a funeral were killed and five others injured when a speeding lorry rammed into a stationary van at Aurad cross, about 100 kms from Gulbarga, early Saturday.

The victims were sitting on the road in front of the van, as one of the tyres had got punctured. The speeding lorry coming from behind crashed into the vehicle and ran over them, police said.

About 18 persons had set out from Yadgir to Bidanava village to participate in the funeral ceremony of one of their relatives.

As the tyre got punctured, the driver went to a nearby place to get a spare wheel. Waiting for him, the passengers, majority of them women, alighted and were sitting on the road in front of the vehicle, police said.

Of the five injured, the condition of the three is stated to be critical.
