As many as 70 newly-elected candidates of the ruling Congress and Opposition parties took oath as members of the 14th Legislative Assembly here on Thursday.
On Wednesday, 146 members had taken oath on the first day of the session. With this, 216 elected members have taken oath in the first two days of the session.
Only seven members remain to fulfil the formality: the former Minister D.K. Shivakumar (Kanakapura), Fairoz Nuruddin Saith (Belgaum North), both of the Congress; B. Sriramulu (Bellary), BSR Congress president; R. Jagdeesh Kumar of the BJP (Hebbal); B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan (Chamarajpet); H.S. Prakash (Hassan), both of the Janata Dal(S); and T.H. Suresh Babu of the BSR Congress (Kampli).
Leader of the Opposition H.D. Kumaraswamy, the former Minister N. Cheluvaraya Swamy, K.S. Puttanaiah of the Karnataka Sarvodaya Party, the former Speaker Ramesh Kumar and the former Minister C.T. Ravi were among the 70 who took oath today.
Following objections raised by Basavaraj Rayaraddi (Congress) on Wednesday, pro-tem Speaker Malikayya V. Guttedar told members to take oath in the prescribed format mentioned under rule 188 of the Schedule III of the Constitution. “All members should strictly follow the rules prescribed in the Constitution and take oath accordingly,” he told members.
Despite Mr. Guttedar’s instructions, Bheema Naik of the Janata Dal(S) representing Hagaribommanahalli took oath in the name of his father.
Twice over
Senior member Vasanth Bangera of the Congress representing Belthangady taluk in Dakshina Kannada took oath as member of the Legislative Assembly twice on Thursday.
First, he took oath in Tulu language and then in Kannada.
Since Tulu is not one of the 22 official languages recognised by the Constitution, Mr. Guttedar instructed Mr. Bangera to take oath in Kannada again.
While Umesh G. Jadav of the Congress representing Chincholi constituency in Gulbarga took oath in English, others members took theirs in Kannada.
