The police have arrested 32 people, including nine youths, in connection with various cases of violence reported in the town late on Sunday evening.
The nine youths, four of whom are minors, were in possession of six petrol bombs in Tamil Colony and were allegedly planning an attack to trigger violence in the town.
Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai said on Tuesday: “They were all misled by someone. We are collecting information to find those responsible. A petrol bomb consists of a bottle filled with petrol and covered by a piece of cloth, which serves as a thread. There are reports of such things used to spark off violence in parts of Kerala.”
Meanwhile, there were incidents of stone-pelting and attack on Datta devotees as they were returning from Bababudangiri. The police have taken 13 people into custody in connection with the alleged attack on devotees on K.M. Road.
In another incident, a bike rider was allegedly assaulted by six people. The police have arrested three of the accused. Vajid, an autorickshaw driver, had complained to the police that he was attacked by a group of youths returning from Bababudangiri. The police have taken the accused into custody and seized their vehicles.
