Nearly 25 persons, most of them college students, were injured when a bus fell into a ditch at Gundyadka village near Karkala on Tuesday.

The students were travelling in a private service bus from Karkala to Manjunath Pai Government First Grade College at Gundyadka. Near Gundyadka, the bus driver veered a little to the left of the narrow road to give way to a vehicle from the opposite side at around 9.30 a.m.

Since the soil had become wet and loose due to the rains, the bus slowly fell into a nearby ditch injuring 25 persons, including students.

Soon, people from the village rushed to help the passengers. The police and personnel of the Fire and Emergency Services also took part in the rescue operation.

The injured were rushed to the Government Hospital in Karkala. “All the persons have suffered minor injuries. Luckily there was little water in the ditch,” said Karkala Tahsildar Raghavendra S.

It took about an hour-and-a-half for a crane to remove the bus from the ditch.
