Even after five years since education became a fundamental right, 14,489 children continue to remain out of school as per the Education Department’s own admission. The High Court took up a suo motu case based on The Hindu’s report on out-of-school children two years ago. A total of 1.2 lakh of the 1.68 lakh out-of-school children have been mainstreamed into schools and 12,338 records were duplicated in the survey. Department officials say 14,489 children, who are yet to be mainstreamed, are migrant children and the task of enrolling them is challenging.
