As many as 11 members of a group of over 35 persons who were returning to their native place after a family function were killed after their tractor-trailer overturned near Hulakoti Krishi Vijgnan Kendra in Gadag district on Thursday.
All the dead persons were said to be from Sidnekoppa village in Yelburga taluk of Koppal district.
They had gone to Umachagi village in Kundgol taluk of Dharwad district and were returning when the accident occurred.
According to initial reports, the tractor overturned after being hit by a transport vehicle. All those in the tractor were caught under the trailer of the tractor.
While 10 of them, including eight women, were killed on the spot, over 15 persons were injured in the accident.
While most of the injured persons were shifted to the Gadag district government hospital, some of them were taken to private hospitals in Gadag.
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister and district-in-charge H.K. Patil, who visited the spot, said that compensation would be given to the families of the dead and the injured as per government guidelines.
Gadag Rural Police have registered a case. The names of the dead were not immediately available.
