As many as 10 houses were damaged and low-lying areas were flooded in parts of Udupi district due to rain accompanied by strong winds on Wednesday. Sea erosion too has been reported from different parts of the district.
According to the Udupi Taluk Office, five houses were damaged in Udupi taluk. The house of Savitri Naik was damaged when a tree fell on it and the damage had been estimated at Rs. 25,000, while the house of Amba, also in the same village, was damaged and the loss estimated at Rs. 10,000.
The house of Ravikala at Pangala village was damaged and the loss was estimated at Rs. 15,000, while Naruva Shettigar’s house was damaged at Korangarapady.
As many as five houses were damaged due to rain and winds in Kundapur taluk. According to the Kundapur Taluk Office, a house belonging to Marali Poojary was partially damaged at Kasaba village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 15,000, while a house belonging to Devu was damaged at Uppinakudru and the loss was estimated at Rs. 15,000.
A house belonging to Uday was damaged at Basrur village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 25,000, while Gomba’s house was damaged at Shankaranarayana village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 30,000.
Baby Poojarti’s house was inundated with rainwater at Gulvady village, while a house called “Hebbagilu Mane” too was damaged when a coconut tree fell on it in the same village.
A well belonging to Aminabi collapsed in Gulvady. A stretch of road between Bijoor and Uppunda was flooded with rainwater. A few houses were inundated near Byndoor.
Two trees on the Karkala Taluk Office premises came down due to strong winds and rain. But no one was hurt.
Meanwhile, according to the Fisheries and Ports Division, about 200 m of land at Gangolli village had suffered sea erosion. About 30 houses are close to the affected areas. Some coconut palms were swept away.
Sea erosion had affected 75 metres of land at Kodibengre, 100 metres of land each at Maravanthe, Hosahithlu and Mannur Padukere, 80 metres of land at Kalihithlu and 60 metres of land at Udyavara-Padukere village.
Stone boulders were being stacked on a priority basis in those areas where houses were likely to be affected by the sea waves, said T.S. Rathod, Executive Engineer, Ports and Fisheries Division.
Udupi received a rainfall of 63.5 mm in the last 24 hours, ended at 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday, while Kundapur and Karkala towns received a rainfall of 117.6 mm and 99.6 mm, respectively.
