Ten new model government degree colleges will be opened primarily for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Adivasi communities.

The Department of Collegiate Education has decided to set up the colleges in Kolar, Chitradurga, Haveri, Chamarajanagar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura, Yadgir, Koppal, and Bidar. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced this in the budget and ₹25 crore has been earmarked for this purpose.

A circular issued by the department states that these colleges will start functioning from the 2018–19 academic year. Around 60% of the seats will be reserved for students belonging to SC, ST and Adivasi communities. If there is not adequate demand from students belonging to these communities, then colleges can admit students from other communities as well. Currently, the department plans to offer B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc. courses in these colleges. The intake will be 40 per class.
