Former Calcutta High Court judge C.S. Karnan was admitted to the State-run SSKM hospital for ‘some tests’ on Thursday.
Speaking to The Hindu, Director General of West Bengal Correctional Services Arun Kumar Gupta said that “Justice Karnan was admitted to SSKM hospital today [Thursday] and is yet to be released.”
Health complications
However, the SSKM authorities did not elaborate on the kind of health complications the former judge was having. “He was brought to the hospital today (Thursday) for some tests and was later admitted,” said an official of SSKM hospital on condition of anonymity.
The development comes a day after Justice Karnan was brought to Kolkata following his arrest from Coimbatore.
On Wednesday, he was taken to a hospital for a check up after he complained of chest pain. A senior official of Presidency Jail said that “he [Justice Karnan] seems to be weak and was taken to SSKM hospital again today [Thursday] for some medical tests which could not be completed yesterday [Wednesday] night.
Justice Karnan, who retired on June 12, had been evading arrest since May 9 following the Supreme Court's verdict sentencing him to six months imprisonment for contempt of court. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court rejected his plea, seeking interim bail and suspension of the six-month prison sentence awarded to him. The Bengal police team arrested the former judge about 40 days after his arrival in Chennai.
In February, the SC issued a contempt of court notice against him for allegedly degrading the judicial institution.
Justice Karnan had written to the Prime Minister and allegedly accused several retired and sitting Supreme Court and High Court judges of corruption.
