Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Kingdom, the separatist Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) on Wednesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron to draw attention to the “rise in extremist communalism and chauvinism with the BJP and RSS nexus in Jammu and Kashmir.”
According to a spokesman, JKLF’s diplomatic head Zafar Khan in a letter to Mr. Cameron said: “There is unabated oppression and violations of basic human rights in Jammu and Kashmir, including the denial of right to assembly and free speech.
“PM Modi must be reminded on his country’s solemn obligations and undertakings to facilitate a free, fair and democratic plebiscite under the U.N.’s auspices.
“Mr. Modi should be taken to task on communalism, extremism and chauvinism that has been unleashed under his watch in Kashmir,” the letter added.
It alleged that the PDP-BJP coalition government has “resulted in communal polarisation of Kashmiri politics.”
“Mr. Modi wished to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution which affirms the autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir, and stipulates the temporary and provisional nature of its relationship and arrangements with India. However Mr. Modi’s failure to have Article 370 abrogated led him to make demographic changes both in Jammu as well as in the valley of Kashmir,” the letter charged.
The JKLF is planning a protest in the U.K. during Mr. Modi’s visit.
