West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Tuesday that Jhargram in Paschim Medinipur will be made a new district.

She made the announcement at the conclusion of her first administrative meeting after the declaration of the Assembly poll results. The meeting was held in Jhargram.

“Jhargram will become a new district and it has already been approved by our Cabinet. We have decided that in the first phase Jhargram, Asansol and Kalimpong will be made new districts,” said Ms. Banerjee.

Pointing out that the process to form the new districts required the permission of the Calcutta High Court, she said there were some additional processes and the State government had initiated them already.

In December last year, the Chief Minister announced the decision to form four new districts: Kalimpong from Darjeeling district, Jhargram from Paschim Medinipur district, Bashirhat from North 24 Parganas and Sundarbans. She had also announced that Bardhaman would be split into two districts.
