With the BJP staking claim to form governments in Goa and Manipur, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday said the Governor is constitutionally right in case of a hung verdict in inviting the leader of the majority coalition.
“In a hung Assembly, if majority of the elected MLAs form a coalition, the Governor would be constitutionally right in inviting the leader of the majority coalition to form the government and prove their majority within a short period,” Mr. Jaitley tweeted.
The Congress had won 28 seats in Manipur, followed by the BJP with 21.
‘Stolen’ elections
Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram accused the BJP of “stealing” elections in Goa and Manipur, saying a party which comes second has “no right” to form the government.
Another Congress leader, Digvijaya Singh, said it was the victory of money power over people’s power. “A party that comes second has no right to form government. BJP stealing elections in Goa and Manipur (sic),” Mr. Chidambaram said in a tweet.
The Congress would continue to fight against communal forces of “money power politics” in Goa, he said. The comment of the Ministers came after the BJP staked claim to form the government in Goa and Manipur — where it failed to emerge as the single largest party — with the support of smaller parties and some Independents.
