Italy on Wednesday expressed confidence that the diplomatic row with India over its refusal to send back two Italian marines will be overcome.
Describing the current standoff as “difficult moments” for the two countries, Italian Ambassador Daniele Mancini said he will not shy away from finding a solution.
“I am confident that the two mature democracies such as ours will overcome these difficulties. We are working with Indian institutions and government to do whatever best can be done to overcome these current difficult moments,” Mr. Mancini said at an event.
“We will not shy away from this. It is very much present in our mind,” he said, a day after Ministry of External Affairs summoned him to convey India’s position on this matter in the “strongest of terms“.
Angered by a sudden U-turn by the Italian government which refused the return of two marines, charged with killing of two Indian fishermen last year, India on Tuesday demanded that they be sent back to face trial for homicide in the country.
The marines —— Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Girone — charged with homicide for killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast in February last year in an anti-piracy operation, were permitted by the apex court on 22nd of last month to go to Italy for four weeks for voting in the elections.
India also rejected the stand of the Italian government which has gone back on its assurances.

This incident shows what a country Italy is --- they have no respect for human life, their marines have murdered Indian citizens, and their government says they won't respect the court of law.
Is the Indian government too soft? I think so.
When the Italian marines were arrested then, Italy you used all their
efforts to bring back the two to Italy because at that time ball was in
Indian Government court. Now Indian government itself put the ball in
Italian court and hoping that Italian will send the ball back in Indian
court. then it is only day dreaming.
After critically watching the series of events, I can now realize that
GOI is not only mismanaging our internal affairs but also international
affairs.
The news seem to be eye candy pertaining to Italy being hopeful to end the stand-off as the hint from Italy is still invisible about sending back the naval officers to India. The diplomatic way is being adopted by both the countries. Indian PM says, Italy might have to face the diplomatic consequences but apparently it is not effective enough to budge the Italian diplomats. Italian diplomats keep rotting about to overcome of the difficult situation and they will not shy away from the situation is not giving sense of confidence to India for sure.
Do mature democracies like Italy promise one thing and do something else? Do they
"bait & switch" and play under handed games? If they are a mature democracy, they
would stick to the deals made and return the marines to India to stand trial in a
special court as ordered by the Indian Supreme Court. Otherwise they are merely
deceiving nation states.
Why were these marines sent again back to Italy for election, they could have easily cast their votes at their Embassy in Delhi? The PM says he got the news from the newspapers, thank God he goes through the headlines, and what are those incompetent ministers around him doing? We want to be an emerging power, we can't even defend those who are killed without any reason, their only reason being they were trying to make a living...this Govt has nothing more left to prove, I hope the will be shown the door, but what will the people get in the bargain??? Real shame on the so called biggest democracy, biggest only in size and population but not in anything else.
What a Nation ? Actions of the Government and even the Honorable Court
of the Land shows that they have no concern for the poor Citizens life.
It is hightime all Indians should boycott Italian Goods, Italian cars and even Italian nationals in India for their dubious character .How dare a small country like Italy ,nose deep in debt, can even think of duping a mammoth power in South East Asia by telling blatant lies .
