India-China ties have a negative public persona in India, Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar said on Tuesday. The comments regarding India-China ties came even as China criticised India over the upcoming visit of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama to Arunachal Pradesh.
“Public persona of this relationship (India-China) in my country is overly negative,” said Mr. Jaishankar during a public event here.
Continued differences
The response of Mr. Jaishankar underlines the continued differences between India and China over a number of issues including territorial claims, counter-terror measures and Tibet.
Mr. Jaishankar obliquely referred to India-China differences on terrorism and said, “Nothing has globalised more than terrorism, yet responses to it remain very tactical, national; therefore remain very limited.” India’s anti-terror campaign at the United Nations had faced a hurdle last year when China placed a ‘technical hold’ on the U.N. counter-terror committee’s move to blacklist Pakistan-based terrorist leader Masood Azhar.
