A 21-year-old Indian-origin student drowned in the Pickerel Lake in Canada's Ontario province while trying to save a friend on Sunday last.

Ishan Srinivasan, a resident of Mississauga in the Toronto suburb, drowned when the canoe he was in capsized, plunging him and two friends into the frigid waters, about 50 km north of Huntsville, The Toronto Star reported.

Srinivasan, who was studying at the University of Waterloo, tried to save one of his friends who was struggling to stay afloat despite being the only one wearing a life-jacket.

“The canoe tipped over and I knew if we didn't call someone it would have been over for all of us,” said Srinivasan's friend, who asked not to be named.

By the time rescuers arrived, Srinivasan had disappeared underwater. Srinivasan's body was pulled from the lake on Monday.
