To help the hurricane-ravaged Philippines, where over 10,000 people are feared to have been killed in a devastating cyclone, India has airlifted a large amount of relief material to the beleaguered nation.

The Defence Ministry said the response was mounted by the Joint Services and coordinated by Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff.

Relief material comprising medicines, hygiene chemicals, tents, blankets, tarpaulins and ready-to-eat meals have been airlifted by a C-130 Super Hercules aircraft of the Air Force.

“The aircraft reached Tacloban, the epicentre of the devastating natural calamity where more than 10,000 people are feared dead, on Saturday and delivered the relief supplies,” a statement by the Ministry said.

The second consignment, it said, was likely to be sent by an Indian naval ship that was expected to be despatched shortly from Vizag.
