Highly heinous, says media panel

June 12, 2011 11:57 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 01:23 am IST - NEW DELHI:

South Asia Media Commission India (SAMCI) president K.K. Katyal on Sunday condemned the brutal killing of senior Mumbai journalist J. Dey on Saturday and drew a parallel with the recent killing of senior Pakistani journalist Saleem Shahzad in Islamabad.

In a statement, Mr. Katyal said both were targeted for their missionary zeal to expose the nefarious activities of powerful elements. He demanded a thorough enquiry into the “highly heinous” murder of Dey by the best of investigating agencies to nab the perpetrators.

Mr. Katyal demanded constitution of a fast-track court to try the guilty and bring them to book. He hoped Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithvi Chauhan would throw the entire might of the State administration behind the probe.

The killing had sent shock waves through the media community and leaders of the government and political parties. The government and political establishment should translate into concrete steps their sympathy for slain journalists and ensure protection to mediapersons, especially those engaged in writing on the activities of mafias and gangs.
