Gujarat forms SIT to probe killing of Dalits in 2012 police firing

In a bid to pacify Dalits who continue to protests against atrocities on them, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the killing of three Dalit youths during a police firing in 2012.

The government's move to set up the SIT, headed by Rajkot Police Commissioner Anupan Singh Gahlot, has apparently pre-empted a rally planned by Dalit groups and families of the victims on August 21, 2016, in the State capital Gandhinagar to seek justice for the three Dalit minor victims killed in the police firing.

A late-night press release issued by junior Home Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja stated that besides setting up an SIT, the government will also pay Rs. 20 lakh as additional compensation to the victims' families.

After the September 2012 incident, the State government, headed by then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, had set up an inquiry committee to probe into the firing incident. However, the government is yet to table its report in the Assembly or make it public.
