The Goods and Services Tax Bill is likely to be passed by the Rajya Sabha in the current session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said.

A delegation of the Congress Party, led by party president Sonia Gandhi, had its doubts cleared on various issues raised during their meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, he said. The GST Bill was introduced by the UPA government and extensive consultations have been conducted on the subject since 2007 under the auspices of empowered committee of finance ministers of States, he said.

GST has been introduced in 160 countries and it holds the promise of bringing in an additional two to 2.5 per cent growth in the economy, the Minister explained.

Once passed by both Houses of Parliament it would have to be passed by all the States to ensure that it was rolled out in the next financial year, he added.
